Death Toll Rises: 44 Palestinians Killed in Latest Israeli Strikes

Gaza City (AFP/Staff Report) — May 29, 2025
In one of the deadliest days in recent weeks, Israeli airstrikes claimed the lives of at least 44 Palestinians on Thursday, with a devastating hit on a central Gaza home killing 23 members of the same family, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense agency.

Civil defence official Mohammad al-Mughayyir confirmed the death toll to AFP, stating, “Twenty-three people were killed, others injured, and several remain missing following an Israeli strike on the Qreinawi family’s home, located east of the Al-Bureij refugee camp.”

In a separate incident earlier Thursday, two Palestinians were killed and several injured by Israeli forces’ gunfire near the American aid centre in the southern Gaza Strip’s Morag axis. The aid centre, operated by a U.S.-backed organization, is part of a controversial new aid distribution system that Israel claims prevents supplies from reaching Hamas. However, the United Nations and European Union have expressed strong concern over its operations and security implications.

Footage from Al-Bureij, captured by AFP, showed families sifting through the rubble of what was once a home — now reduced to debris.

The Israeli military released a statement asserting that it had struck “dozens of terror targets” throughout the Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours, including tunnels, sniper positions, military structures, and other infrastructure. The military did not confirm responsibility for the Al-Bureij strike or the gunfire near the aid centre but said investigations were underway.

The escalation is part of a broader offensive that intensified following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. That assault left 1,218 people dead in Israel, mostly civilians, and led to the capture of 251 hostages. As of now, 57 hostages remain in Gaza, with the Israeli military confirming that 34 of them are dead.

Since the end of a two-month ceasefire on March 18, the Gaza health ministry reports that at least 3,986 Palestinians have been killed, bringing the total death toll in the conflict to 54,249, the majority of whom are civilians.

Efforts by international mediators to broker a new ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful.
