Karachi was jolted by its sixth earthquake in just 24 hours on Monday, as mild tremors were felt across various parts of the city. The latest quake, with a magnitude of 2.2, struck near the Landhi fault line, adding to the growing number of seismic events in the region.
Sixth Earthquake Strikes Karachi
On Monday, Karachi experienced its sixth earthquake within a span of 24 hours. The tremor, measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale, occurred along the Landhi fault line, with its epicenter located 5 kilometers southeast of Malir. The depth of the quake was recorded at 29 kilometers.
Earlier, tremors were felt in Malir Saudabad at 11:03 am, followed by a stronger 3.2 magnitude earthquake at 1:29 pm, which affected Malir, Landhi, and Quaidabad. The first quake of the day, occurring in the early hours, caused panic among residents who rushed out of buildings in fear.
Repeated Tremors Cause Widespread Alarm
The National Seismological Center reported that the most recent tremors were felt across Karachi’s Landhi, Malir, Quaidabad, Sherpao Colony, and Port Qasim areas. While the earthquakes have been categorized as low-intensity events, the frequency of these seismic activities has heightened public anxiety.
On the previous day, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck the city, with its epicenter near Quaidabad. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage were reported in any of the incidents.
Experts Urge Preparedness Amid Rising Earthquakes
Seismologists have raised concerns over the increasing frequency of tremors in Karachi, a city located near tectonic boundaries. Experts emphasize the need for greater earthquake preparedness, especially given the city’s rapid, unregulated urban development.
Authorities have urged Karachi’s residents to remain calm, avoid rumors, and follow safety guidelines during seismic events. Despite the frequent tremors, no major damage or casualties have been reported so far.
