Sindh CM Removes IG Jail, Suspends Officials After Malir Jailbreak

Following the escape of over 200 inmates during an earthquake-triggered evacuation at Karachi’s Malir jail, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has removed the Inspector General of Prisons and suspended senior prison officials, calling the incident a result of “gross negligence.”

CM Calls Incident ‘Unacceptable’
In an emergency meeting at the Chief Minister’s House, CM Murad Ali Shah expressed deep concern over the jailbreak, stating it was “completely unacceptable.” He blamed poor coordination and lack of preparedness by prison officials and directed immediate disciplinary action.

Key Officers Removed, Inquiry Ordered
The Inspector General of Prisons was removed, while the Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) and Superintendent of Malir Jail were suspended. The CM ordered the Sindh Home Secretary to conduct a full security audit of all prisons across the province.

Over 200 Inmates Escaped, Manhunt Underway
According to the briefing, 216 inmates fled when prison staff moved them to the open courtyard during tremors. Amid the chaos, many escaped. So far, 83 have been recaptured, and a province-wide search operation is ongoing. Officials confirmed that the fugitives were not involved in serious crimes.

Warning to Escapees
CM Murad urged the remaining fugitives to surrender voluntarily. “Failure to surrender will result in prosecution under the Anti-Terrorism Act and potential imprisonment of up to seven years,” he warned.

Systemic Reforms Promised
The CM ordered Commissioner Karachi and Karachi Police Chief to lead a transparent investigation. Speaking later at an unrelated event, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to overhauling the prison system and addressing security flaws.
