Sydney, Australia – Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam has joined the Sydney Sixers for the 15th season of the Big Bash League (BBL), sparking excitement among teammates and cricket fans alike. Hailed as a game-changer for the tournament, Babar’s signing is one of the most high-profile acquisitions in BBL history.

England’s Sam Billings, a seasoned wicketkeeper-batter, welcomed Babar, calling him “King Babar Azam” in a recent interview. “He’s been a world-class performer for such a long time. Any competition featuring a player like Babar benefits not only the Sixers but the tournament as a whole,” Billings said. He expressed relief at having Babar on his side, adding, “I’d much rather have him with me than against me.”

Babar, 30, boasts over 10,000 international runs and is celebrated for his consistency across formats. A former Pakistan captain, he led the team to the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup semi-finals and the 2022 final. His signing, announced on Friday, capitalizes on BBL rules allowing one pre-draft international player per team, ahead of the official BBL 15 Draft on Thursday, June 19.

In a video message, Babar shared his excitement: “Super pumped to join the Sydney Sixers. Can’t wait to share the dressing room with Steve Smith and Josh Hazlewood. Making my BBL debut will be special.”

Former England captain Michael Vaughan also praised the move, calling it a “great signing” on X.

Babar’s arrival is expected to elevate the Sixers’ campaign and draw massive crowds, with Billings noting Pakistan’s “off-the-charts” talent pool, referencing his own experience in the Pakistan Super League. As anticipation builds, Babar’s BBL debut promises to be a highlight of the season.
