Rawalpindi, June 17, 2025 – Imran Khan, the incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has postponed his planned nationwide protest movement for two weeks, citing the need for national unity amid escalating global tensions, particularly the Iran-Israel conflict, his sister Noreen Niazi announced on Tuesday.
Decision for Unity
Speaking to journalists outside Central Jail Adiala, Noreen Niazi relayed Khan’s decision to delay the protests, emphasizing his call for cohesion during challenging times. “Imran Khan is aware of global developments and stresses the importance of national unity,” she said. The 71-year-old former prime minister, who has been imprisoned since August 2023 on multiple charges, believes the current international climate warrants a pause in political agitation.
Protest Plans on Hold
Last month, Khan had announced plans to lead a “decisive” protest movement against the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)-led coalition government from prison. Senator Ali Zafar had previously conveyed Khan’s directive to PTI leadership to mobilize for the campaign. However, the recent escalation in the Middle East has prompted Khan to reconsider the timing of the movement.
Khan’s Global Stance
Uzma Khan, who met with the PTI founder at Adiala Jail on Tuesday, highlighted that Khan’s positions on international issues, including the Israel-Palestine conflict, are widely recognized. His decision to delay protests reflects a broader awareness of global dynamics and their implications for Pakistan.

Political Context
The postponement comes against the backdrop of stalled talks between PTI and the government. Last year, both sides agreed to consultations to resolve differences but failed to progress after PTI withdrew from the dialogue, demanding judicial probes into the events of May 9 and November 26, 2023. Recent calls from the government for national dialogue have yet to yield results.
Looking Ahead
Khan’s decision to delay the protest underscores his intent to prioritize national stability during a period of global uncertainty. PTI supporters await further updates as the party navigates its next steps in Pakistan’s complex political landscape.
