The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast pre-monsoon rains across the country from June 20 to 23. These rains, expected annually between June and September, are vital for easing summer heat, supporting agriculture, and ensuring water supply for millions across South Asia.
According to the PMD, weather systems from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, along with a westerly wave, will begin affecting central and northern Pakistan from June 20. As a result, dust storms, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall are expected in several regions, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and many parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa such as Peshawar, Swat, and Mansehra.
Other areas likely to experience similar weather from June 21 to 23 include Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal. Rain is also expected in Sukkur, Larkana, and Jacobabad from June 22 to 24.
The PMD has warned of potential damage from high winds and heavy rain, which could affect trees, electric poles, solar panels, and weak structures. Urban flooding is possible in cities such as Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi.
Farmers are advised to plan agricultural activities accordingly, while the public, tourists, and travelers should take necessary precautions. The department also mentioned that the ongoing heatwave will begin to ease during the forecast period.
In May, heavy rains caused flash floods in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, damaging infrastructure and agricultural land. Although no casualties were reported, several livestock were lost, and homes were affected. Additionally, last month’s rainstorms in Punjab claimed at least 13 lives and injured over 90 people.
The PMD continues to monitor weather developments and advises the public to stay updated with official advisories during this active pre-monsoon period.
