Punjab Plans to Set Up 2,000 Electric Bus Charging Stations

The Punjab government is set to install 2,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations for electric buses across the province, under an initiative led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. This move follows the successful launch of the electric bus service in Lahore and is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable public transportation. In the initial phase, 600 electric buses will be deployed throughout Punjab.

The initiative was discussed during a video conference chaired by Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman at the Civil Secretariat. Attending the session were officials from the health and transport departments, the CEO of the Waste Management Company, as well as divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, and the Director General of the Lahore Development Authority.

The chief secretary directed deputy commissioners to identify suitable locations in their districts for the installation of charging stations and bus depots. He emphasized that the project aims to provide citizens with modern, comfortable, and internationally standardized transport options. He also called for a strict campaign against overcrowded public transport to enhance passenger safety.

Expansion of Electric Bus Service

Punjab launched its electric bus service in Lahore in February 2025 with 27 buses. Following positive feedback, the government announced plans to expand the fleet to 500 buses by August. With a fixed fare of Rs. 20, these buses are equipped with amenities such as free WiFi and mobile charging ports for passenger convenience. The success of the Lahore service has encouraged the government to roll out similar services across other cities in the province.

Focus on Environmental Sustainability

This initiative reflects a growing focus on clean and eco-friendly transportation. As part of a larger environmental strategy, the government also launched a Vehicle Emission Testing program in May 2025 to curb pollution from traditional vehicles. These efforts are especially important for improving air quality, particularly during the high-smog months of October and November when air pollution levels in cities like Lahore become hazardous. Collectively, these steps underscore the province’s commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
