Islamabad, June 17, 2025 – Pakistan has initiated the evacuation of diplomats’ families and non-essential staff from Iran due to escalating regional tensions, a senior Foreign Office official confirmed. The move comes as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, which has heightened security concerns across the region.

Diplomatic Operations Continue

The Foreign Office emphasized that Pakistan’s Embassy in Tehran and its consulates in Iran will remain fully operational despite the evacuation. “This is a precautionary step to ensure the safety of our diplomats’ families and non-essential personnel,” the official stated. Essential diplomatic staff will continue their duties to maintain Pakistan’s presence in Iran.

Regional Conflict Intensifies

The decision follows a sharp escalation in hostilities between Iran and Israel. Israel’s recent airstrikes, aimed at disrupting Iran’s alleged nuclear ambitions, have resulted in significant casualties, with over 220 reported deaths in Iran, including key military and scientific figures. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks, causing at least 20 deaths in Israel. The conflict has led to Israel claiming control over Iranian airspace, with further escalation expected.

Evacuation of Pakistani Nationals

In parallel, Pakistan is facilitating the return of its citizens from Iran. Over 700 Pakistanis, including 214 students, have crossed back into Pakistan via the Taftan border in recent days. The government has arranged special security measures to ensure safe passage for those returning, including traders and drivers. Three buses carrying students arrived at Taftan from Tehran on Monday, with evacuees being processed and relocated to Pakistan House.

Border and Travel Updates

While the Taftan border crossing remains operational for trade and passenger movement, other border points in Balochistan, including Panjgur, Gwadar, and Kech, have been closed due to security concerns. The Ministry of Interior has issued an advisory urging citizens to avoid travel to Iran amid the ongoing conflict. Airspace between the two nations remains suspended, further complicating travel.

Ongoing Monitoring

Pakistan continues to monitor the situation closely, prioritizing the safety of its citizens and diplomatic personnel. The government has assured that it will take all necessary measures to protect its nationals while maintaining diplomatic engagement in the region.
