The Pakistani government has announced plans to distribute over 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric loaders to the public through a subsidized loan scheme, aimed at reducing the country’s reliance on imported fuel, promoting environmental sustainability, and creating jobs. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of the initiative during a high-level meeting on Friday.

On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed the government’s new initiative to promote electric vehicles (EVs) across Pakistan, including more than 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric loaders. The scheme will offer these vehicles to the public through easy loans and at subsidized rates. The government’s goal is to reduce the country’s dependence on costly imported fuel, conserve foreign exchange, and reduce environmental pollution, while also supporting local industries.

During a high-level meeting, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of making electric vehicles affordable and accessible to the common public. He announced that top-performing students from educational boards, including the federal board, would be awarded electric bikes for free as part of the initiative. Additionally, unemployed individuals will be prioritized to receive electric rickshaws and loaders to promote self-employment and reduce joblessness.

The scheme also includes a special 25% quota for women, with the remaining distribution based on provincial population share. In recognition of the unique needs of Balochistan, the Prime Minister instructed an increase in the province’s share to 10%. He emphasized the need for transparency, calling for third-party validation of the distribution process.

The initiative is already contributing to local business growth, with four new battery manufacturing firms setting up operations in Pakistan due to the scheme. This is expected to generate significant business and employment opportunities, particularly in the electric vehicle industry.

PM Shehbaz further directed that all vehicles provided under the scheme must meet strict quality and safety standards. He also called for a comprehensive public awareness campaign to ensure citizens are well-informed about the benefits of the program.

The government’s support for low-cost financing will make electric bikes, rickshaws, and loaders accessible to many, with an aim to significantly boost the adoption of green transportation in Pakistan. The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in economic recovery, job creation, and environmental conservation.
