In a strategic political move, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has nominated Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the head of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), as the new Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. The nomination comes after former opposition leader Omar Ayub’s disqualification following his conviction in the May 9 cases. Additionally, Azam Khan Swati has been named as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate.
Imran Khan, the founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has finalized the nomination of Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. Achakzai, who also leads the multi-party opposition alliance, Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz, was selected for the influential position after former opposition leader Omar Ayub was disqualified from his post due to his conviction in connection with the May 9 cases.
Salman Akram Raja, the PTI Secretary General, confirmed the nomination on Wednesday, highlighting Achakzai’s leadership of the opposition alliance and his political influence within the National Assembly. This move is seen as part of PTI’s strategy to strengthen its position in the parliament following significant political shifts.
Along with Achakzai’s nomination, Imran Khan also announced Azam Khan Swati as the new Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. This dual nomination reflects PTI’s continued efforts to assert its political presence at both the federal and provincial levels.
The political changes follow the disqualification of PTI leaders Omar Ayub and Shibli Faraz. Ayub, who was leading the opposition in the National Assembly, lost his seat after his conviction, while Faraz’s removal came as part of the same court order. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) issued disqualification notifications for both leaders, further reshuffling the opposition ranks. Despite this, the two PTI leaders have appealed their disqualifications before the Peshawar High Court (PHC).
The nominations of Achakzai and Swati come at a critical juncture in Pakistan’s political landscape, as the opposition parties continue to navigate the challenges posed by the current political and judicial environment.
