GENEVA, Switzerland — In a diplomatic push to gain broader recognition for Palestine, Palestinian Authority representatives are touring Europe, seeking to convince countries that have yet to recognize a Palestinian state. The effort comes as a response to the shifting dynamics in international politics following the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
During a visit to Switzerland on Wednesday, Mohammad Shtayyeh, former prime minister of Palestine and currently a special envoy for President Mahmud Abbas, revealed that he had met with Switzerland’s top diplomat to encourage Bern to join the growing list of nations that have officially recognized Palestine.
Shtayyeh outlined his itinerary, which includes upcoming visits to the Netherlands and Austria. “Another delegation will be visiting the Baltic states, and our president hopes to visit Italy and Germany in the near future,” he said, addressing the media at a briefing organized by the UN correspondents association ACANU.
Europe’s Growing Support for Palestinian Statehood
The diplomatic tour comes after a series of recent recognitions of Palestine by European nations, with a majority now formally acknowledging the Palestinian state. Last month, countries including Britain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Portugal made official declarations recognizing Palestine, a shift largely motivated by the escalating war in Gaza.
This growing European support is further bolstered by non-European nations like Australia and Canada, who have also made similar moves, despite strong opposition from Israel.
