Pakistan’s mountaineering community celebrated a major achievement on Thursday after renowned climber Salman Ateeque successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the 13th Pakistani to conquer the world’s tallest mountain.

According to expedition officials, Ateeque reached the 8,849-metre peak at approximately 11:39am local time after a carefully planned summit push.

The successful ascent has added another significant chapter to Pakistan’s growing reputation in high-altitude mountaineering.
Sources associated with the expedition said Salman Ateeque was the only Pakistani climber to secure a permit for Everest during the 2026 season. Hundreds of mountaineers from around the world are currently attempting Himalayan expeditions, with Nepal reportedly issuing around 464 climbing permits to individuals from nearly 80 countries.
Large groups from China and India have dominated this year’s climbing activity, but the Salman Ateeque Everest Summit stood out as a major achievement for Pakistan’s sports and adventure community.
Officials familiar with the expedition stated that Ateeque successfully crossed the dangerous Khumbu Icefall before making his final climb during a favourable weather window.
The Khumbu Icefall is widely regarded as one of the deadliest sections of the Everest route because of shifting glaciers, deep crevasses, and unstable ice formations.
Professional Background Behind the Historic Climb
Apart from his mountaineering accomplishments, Salman Ateeque also has an extensive professional career in electrical engineering and telecommunications.
He reportedly carries more than two decades of experience in the telecom sector while actively pursuing high-altitude climbing challenges.
Before the Salman Ateeque Everest Summit, the climber had already gained international recognition after successfully scaling Mount Manaslu in Nepal last year. Mount Manaslu is the eighth-highest mountain in the world and is considered among the most technically demanding Himalayan peaks.
His latest achievement reflects the increasing presence of Pakistani climbers on some of the world’s most difficult mountains.
Pakistan’s Everest History Continues to Grow
Pakistan first entered Everest history in 2000 when legendary mountaineer Nazir Sabir became the country’s first climber to reach the summit.
In 2013, Samina Baig made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to successfully scale Mount Everest.
Other Pakistani climbers who have reached Everest include Hassan Sadpara, Mirza Ali Baig, Abdul Jabbar Bhatti, Shehroze Kashif, Sirbaz Khan, Sajid Ali Sadpara, Naila Kiani, Wajidullah Nagri, Abdul Joshi and Saad Bin Munawar.
Among them, Sirbaz Khan earned global recognition as the first Pakistani to scale all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres. Meanwhile, Sajid Ali Sadpara became the first Pakistani climber to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen.
Focus Turns to Safe Descent
While the successful summit has sparked celebrations among climbers and sports fans, officials stressed that descending Everest safely remains equally important.
The mountaineering community is now awaiting Salman Ateeque’s safe return to Everest Base Camp after completing the historic expedition.
The Salman Ateeque Everest Summit is being viewed as another inspiring moment for Pakistan’s adventure sports sector and may encourage more young climbers to pursue international mountaineering goals.
