A huge explosion at a chemical factory in eastern China killed at least five people on Tuesday, with six still missing and 19 others injured, according to Chinese state media.
The blast happened around noon at the Youdao Chemical Plant in Gaomi, a town in Shandong province, about 450 km southeast of Beijing.
What Happened?
Videos shared on social media showed:
- A giant cloud of grey smoke rising into the sky
- Fires breaking out in the industrial area
- Broken windows and debris scattered across the road
One local resident said his home shook from the explosion, even though he lived over 7 kilometers away.
Response and Rescue
China’s emergency services sent:
- 55 vehicles
- Over 230 firefighters and rescuers
The plant, which makes pesticides and medical chemicals, employs about 500 people, according to reports.
A Pattern of Industrial Accidents
China has seen several deadly industrial incidents over the years. In 2015, a massive explosion in the port city of Tianjin killed over 170 people and injured hundreds more.
