Strong Tremors Felt Across Pakistan After 5.6-Magnitude Earthquake
A 5.6-magnitude earthquake jolted several regions of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Peshawar, and Rawalpindi, on Friday evening, causing strong tremors throughout the country. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that the epicentre of the quake was located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, at a depth of 120 kilometers.
Affected Areas and No Immediate Casualties
Tremors were felt across multiple areas, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Chitral, Swat, Gilgit, and Abbottabad. Residents reported shaking buildings and swaying structures, but fortunately, no immediate reports of damage or casualties were received. The PMD’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre confirmed the seismic activity and indicated that the depth of the earthquake was significant, adding to the intensity of the tremors.
Earthquake Activity in the Region
This latest earthquake follows a series of seismic events in the region. Just last month, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake had struck Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, causing widespread concern but no significant damage. The area, located at the intersection of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, has long been prone to seismic activity, with both Pakistan and Afghanistan frequently experiencing earthquakes.
Recent Seismic Events in the Region
In September, a massive 6.0-magnitude earthquake devastated Afghanistan’s eastern region, resulting in more than 2,200 fatalities and leaving thousands more injured. The tremors from that quake were felt as far as Lahore in Pakistan. Earlier this year, Karachi experienced multiple tremors, with at least 57 recorded in one month, attributed to the reactivation of the Landhi Fault Line after several decades of dormancy. According to Chief Meteorologist Aamir Haider, the Landhi Fault is going through a normalization phase, which could account for the increased seismic activity in the area.
Looking Ahead: Seismic Activity Remains a Concern
While no major damage has been reported from Friday’s earthquake, the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity remains a significant concern. Pakistan and Afghanistan, located in one of the world’s most active seismic zones, continue to experience tremors with regularity. Authorities urge residents to stay alert and prepared for potential aftershocks as the area remains prone to further seismic events.
As the region continues to experience earthquakes, both governments and citizens are urged to strengthen their preparedness for future events. While the immediate impact of this latest quake was minimal, the frequency of seismic activity underscores the importance of continued vigilance.
