Cricket legend Wasim Akram has called for Babar Azam’s return to Pakistan’s national T20 squad ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup. Despite recent underwhelming performances, Akram believes Babar’s experience and ability to anchor the innings are crucial for Pakistan in the upcoming tournaments.
Wasim Akram, one of Pakistan’s greatest fast bowlers, has publicly expressed his support for Babar Azam’s inclusion in the national T20 team for the 2025 Asia Cup. Speaking in a recent interview, Akram emphasized the importance of having a seasoned player like Babar in the squad, especially as Pakistan prepares for the high-stakes tournaments ahead, including the Asia Cup and the World Cup.

Babar Azam, who last played a T20 International for Pakistan against South Africa in December 2024, was dropped from the squad following a series of underwhelming performances, including a lower strike rate. However, Akram believes that the senior batter still has much to offer the team, particularly in pivotal matches.
“If I had the authority, I would definitely include Babar Azam in the national T20 team,” Akram stated. “We need a senior batter in the upcoming Asia Cup and the World Cup. Babar is among the world’s best players, and his ability to adapt his game to the situation is vital.”
Akram highlighted Babar’s ability to anchor run-chases, especially in high-pressure scenarios against top teams. “When we’re chasing 140 or 160, we need someone who can take responsibility and carry the team. Babar has done it in the past and can do it again,” Akram noted, stressing the value of experience in the pressure of major tournaments.
Babar’s last 10 T20I performances have been less than stellar, with 236 runs at an average of 26 and no half-centuries. Despite this, Akram is confident that the 30-year-old has a lot of cricket left in him and can continue to contribute significantly to Pakistan’s success.
When asked about Babar’s ideal position in the batting lineup, Akram shared his thoughts: “The coach can play Babar at any position, but in my opinion, number three is ideal for him.” However, Akram acknowledged that the team’s requirements could dictate where Babar bats depending on the match situation.
Babar’s return to the squad remains a topic of discussion, with many hoping that the 30-year-old can rediscover his form and help Pakistan perform in the upcoming Asia Cup and beyond.
