Two Killed, 18 Injured in South Waziristan Remote-Controlled Blast

A deadly remote-controlled blast near a police van in the Rustam Bazar area of Wana, South Waziristan, has claimed the lives of two people and left at least 18 others injured, including two police officers. The attack, which occurred on Thursday, has prompted authorities to impose an emergency at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Wana, with two of the wounded reported in critical condition.

The explosion took place in the Lower South Waziristan region, targeting a police vehicle in the busy Rustam Bazar area of Wana. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Imran Ullah, the attack left two dead and 14 others injured. Among the wounded were two police officers, whose conditions remain serious. The blast, attributed to a remote-controlled device, has exacerbated concerns about security in the area.

In response to the severity of the injuries, an emergency has been declared at the DHQ Hospital in Wana. Medical teams are working tirelessly to treat the victims, some of whom are in critical condition. The incident adds to the growing security challenges in the region, which has seen an uptick in militant violence in recent months.

This attack follows the tragic deaths of three Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel in Karak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where unidentified attackers opened fire on their vehicle just a day earlier. The increasing violence in South Waziristan and neighboring regions highlights the escalating security concerns.

In a separate incident, a Pakistan Army major and two soldiers were martyred by India-backed terrorists in Balochistan’s Mastung district. The attack, carried out with an improvised explosive device (IED) on the night of August 5-6, has been attributed to a group aligned with Indian-backed terrorism, Fitna al-Hindustan. The martyred personnel were Major Muhammad Rizwan Tahir, Naik Ibni Amin, and Lance Naik Muhammad Younas.

These attacks come amidst a rise in violence in regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, both of which share a border with Afghanistan. A report from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) indicated a slight decrease in terrorist attacks in June, recording 78 militant attacks across the country, which resulted in over 100 deaths. Among the fatalities were 53 security personnel, 39 civilians, and several militants. Despite this decrease, the ongoing attacks suggest continued instability in the region.
