Pakistani Forces Kill 33 Militants in Overnight Operation Near Afghan Border

Pakistani security forces have killed 33 militants during an overnight operation in the Zhob district of Balochistan, following an attempt by insurgents to cross the border from Afghanistan. The operation, targeting members of the Pakistani Taliban, marks a significant military success as Pakistan continues to combat growing militant activity near its border with Afghanistan.

Pakistani military forces have successfully killed 33 militants in an overnight operation conducted in the Zhob district of Balochistan, near the Afghan border. The operation targeted a group of insurgents identified by the military as “Khwarij,” a term the government uses to refer to the Pakistani Taliban. Following the clash, security forces are continuing to search the area to eliminate any remaining insurgents.

The Pakistani military has long accused the Taliban government in Afghanistan of allowing militants to operate along the border, a claim that Kabul has repeatedly denied. Pakistan’s military further claimed that the militants involved in this attack had received support from India, although no evidence was provided to support this accusation. Relations between Pakistan and India have remained tense, with accusations of cross-border support for insurgent groups on both sides.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the operation’s success, commending the security forces for their swift action. This operation follows an ongoing series of counterinsurgency efforts aimed at quelling the persistent threat posed by separatist and militant groups in Balochistan. The region has been a hotspot for insurgent activity, including attacks from the Pakistani Taliban and the separatist Baluch Liberation Army, which demands independence from the Pakistani government.

In a related security move, the Balochistan government announced a suspension of mobile phone internet services until August 31 for security reasons. This comes as Pakistan prepares for its Independence Day celebrations on August 14, a day that has seen insurgent groups target people selling national flags in the past.

Balochistan has witnessed an ongoing insurgency for years, with militant groups continuing to launch attacks despite claims from officials that the insurgency has been largely suppressed. The surge in militant attacks, particularly from the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), has been attributed to the growing influence of the Afghan Taliban since their return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Many TTP leaders and fighters are believed to have taken refuge in Afghanistan, which has emboldened their operations against Pakistan.

In another major operation in April, Pakistani forces killed 54 Pakistani Taliban militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, marking the deadliest clash for militants in 2023. While the military has made strides in curbing the insurgency, violence continues to plague parts of the country, with the TTP frequently claiming responsibility for deadly attacks.
