Pakistan Monsoon Floods: Death Toll Surpasses 650 as KP and Punjab Suffer Heavy Damage

The death toll from Pakistan’s devastating monsoon floods has risen to 660, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab reporting the highest fatalities. Torrential rains have triggered flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts, causing widespread destruction and leaving thousands injured. As relief efforts intensify, authorities face significant challenges in providing aid to the affected regions.

The deadly monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across Pakistan, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reporting 660 deaths as of the latest figures. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has borne the brunt of the disaster, with 392 fatalities, followed by Punjab with 164 deaths. Other provinces have also been severely affected, with smaller casualties reported in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Sindh, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT).

The floods have left at least 935 individuals injured, with Punjab suffering the highest number of injuries at 582. KP follows with 245, while other regions report varying levels of injury. The destruction of homes has been widespread, with over 2,400 houses damaged across the country, including 212 fully destroyed in KP and significant damage in Sindh, GB, AJK, and Punjab.

In KP, areas such as Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, and Abbottabad have been devastated by flash floods and landslides. Swabi witnessed a cloudburst that swept away 15 people along with vehicles, while Mardan’s neighborhoods were submerged under floodwaters. Relief operations have been hampered by continuous rain and the destruction of vital infrastructure, including bridges and roads.

In Buner, the situation is especially dire, with 217 deaths and extensive damage to homes, schools, and businesses. Many residents are trapped or missing, and search efforts are ongoing to locate those feared buried under rocks and debris.

Punjab has also been badly hit, with heavy rains triggering flooding in low-lying areas such as Chakwal and Kallar Kahar. Rising water levels in the Indus River forced evacuations in Rajanpur, and multiple areas were submerged, including villages in Dera Ghazi Khan. Relief teams are working around the clock to restore services and provide aid to the displaced.

The federal government has pledged full support to the provinces, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announcing donations from the federal cabinet to fund relief efforts. The Chief Minister of KP, Ali Amin Gandapur, has also committed one month’s salary, and a special PDMA account will ensure the transparency of fund usage.

Federal ministers are being dispatched to monitor ongoing relief operations, with an emphasis on reopening blocked roads and coordinating evacuations from vulnerable areas. Authorities have warned that the situation may worsen in the coming days, as more rainfall is expected until September.

The monsoon rains have caused significant damage to infrastructure, with roads and bridges in many areas either destroyed or severely damaged. Rescue and rehabilitation efforts are being led by federal and provincial governments, with support from the armed forces and various national organizations. The NDMA has also been coordinating the distribution of food, medicines, and other essential supplies to those affected.

The floods have highlighted the vulnerability of many regions to the monsoon rains, with flash floods and landslides causing destruction in their wake. Local governments and aid organizations are working together to provide shelter, food, and medical care to the victims, while the national government has declared the recovery and rehabilitation efforts a collective national duty.
