US Monitoring Tensions Between Pakistan and India Despite Ceasefire

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the United States’ ongoing vigilance over the fragile ceasefire between Pakistan and India, following a tense period of hostilities earlier this year. Rubio cautioned that ceasefires, while important, are often unstable and can collapse rapidly, especially in volatile regions like South Asia.

In a recent interview, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed that Washington is closely monitoring the situation between Pakistan and India, despite the temporary ceasefire brokered by the United States after intense military clashes between the two nations earlier this year. Rubio underscored the delicate nature of ceasefire agreements, particularly in conflict zones where trust is fragile and tensions remain high.

Referring to the Pakistan-India conflict, Rubio pointed out that ceasefires could fall apart quickly, especially given the volatile geopolitical climate. “Every single day we keep an eye on what’s happening between Pakistan and India… Ceasefires can fall apart very quickly, especially after a three-and-a-half-year war like the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” he stated, drawing attention to the broader challenges of maintaining peace.

The situation between Pakistan and India became particularly dire in May 2025, when Indian forces launched airstrikes on Pakistani territory, triggering a swift and forceful response from Pakistan. The conflict, which lasted for 87 hours, saw Pakistan’s military downing six Indian fighter jets, including three Rafales. The confrontation only ended after US intervention helped broker a ceasefire, with former President Donald Trump publicly crediting US diplomacy for defusing the crisis. While India attempted to minimize the role of Washington, Pakistan praised Trump’s efforts, even nominating him for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in preventing a larger conflict.

Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high, with reports indicating that India may have launched “Operation Mahadev,” a covert operation designed to stage fake encounters and frame detained Pakistanis as militants in an effort to suppress the Kashmiri freedom movement. These developments continue to raise concerns about the stability of the ceasefire and the broader implications for peace in the region.

Rubio, emphasizing the fragile nature of peace agreements, reiterated that while the US remains committed to supporting global peace efforts, lasting stability in regions like South Asia can only be achieved through negotiated settlements, not temporary halts in hostilities.
