Israel Threatens Gaza High-Rises, Says “Gates of Hell” Opening

Israel Announces Intensified Strikes

TEL AVIV – Israel has vowed to expand its military offensive in Gaza by targeting high-rise buildings, warning that the conflict is entering what officials call the “gates of hell.” The Israeli military claims these towers are being used by Hamas and other militant groups as command centers, weapons depots, and operational bases.

Disputed Nature of Targets

However, sources inside Gaza strongly dispute these assertions. Local authorities and humanitarian workers say many of the buildings being struck or threatened include hospitals, medical facilities, and camps used by rescuers and displaced families. Videos and eyewitness accounts show civilians evacuating health centers and aid shelters before airstrikes.

A ball of fire erupts from a building housing various international media, including The Associated Press, after an Israeli airstrike on Saturday, May 15, 2021 in Gaza City. The attack came roughly an hour after the Israeli military ordered people to evacuate the building, which also housed Al-Jazeera and a number of offices and apartments. Human rights groups warn that labeling such facilities as “militant infrastructure” risks justifying strikes on vital civilian lifelines, which would constitute violations of international humanitarian law.

Heavy Civilian Toll

The escalation has already left hundreds dead and thousands injured. Entire neighborhoods in Gaza have been reduced to rubble, while hospitals report being overwhelmed by casualties and shortages of medicine and electricity. Israeli cities, meanwhile, remain under heavy rocket fire, forcing civilians into shelters.

Global Concern Over Civilian Infrastructure

International organizations, including the United Nations, have called for restraint and condemned attacks on civilian structures. Aid groups say the destruction of hospitals and rescue camps will worsen the already dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where food, fuel, and medical supplies are running dangerously low.

Conflict Outlook

Despite calls for de-escalation, Israel insists that any building it deems tied to Hamas will be destroyed. With Hamas continuing rocket barrages and Israel pledging more strikes on Gaza’s high-rises, observers warn of a protracted conflict with devastating consequences for civilians caught in the middle.
