Pakistan Government Waives Electricity Bills for Flood Victims
In a major relief measure for flood-affected citizens, the federal government of Pakistan has waived the electricity bills for August for domestic consumers impacted by the recent flash floods. The decision, confirmed by sources in the Power Division, is aimed at easing the financial burden on those who have suffered due to the devastating floods.
Affected Areas and Relief Package Details
The waiver applies to all categories of domestic consumers, including those in regions heavily impacted by the flash floods. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that from June to October, the floods killed at least 1,037 people and injured over 1,000 others. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the waiver as part of a broader relief package to support flood victims.
For those who have already paid their August bills, adjustments will be made through their respective electricity distribution companies, such as Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco), Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco), and others.
Non-Domestic Consumers Offered Deferred Payments
While the electricity bills of domestic consumers have been fully waived, the government has not waived bills for non-domestic consumers, including commercial and industrial users. However, these consumers have been given the option to defer their August bills for four months and clear the pending dues in six instalments, providing much-needed flexibility for businesses affected by the floods.
Prime Minister’s Address and Government Support
In a televised address last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the relief package, acknowledging the severe human and material losses caused by the flooding. He emphasized that helping flood victims was the government’s duty and directed the relevant authorities to implement immediate relief measures.
Under the package, not only was one month’s electricity bill waived for residential consumers, but the collection of August bills from commercial and industrial users was also postponed. The federal government has pledged to cover the cost of the waived bills, ensuring that the burden is not passed on to consumers.
Further Relief Measures and Rehabilitation Plans
In his address, Prime Minister Sharif also highlighted that the losses in the agricultural, commercial, and industrial sectors were being assessed. He assured that further relief measures would follow if the assessment revealed greater damage. The government remains committed to the full rehabilitation of all flood-affected regions and is actively working on recovery plans for affected areas.
This relief package provides crucial support to flood victims during an incredibly challenging time. As Pakistan works towards recovery, the government’s swift action to waive electricity bills and offer deferred payments offers a glimmer of hope for those struggling with the aftermath of the floods.
