Punjab Government Moves to Ban TLP Amid Rising Tensions

In response to a fresh protest call by the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) religious party, the Punjab government has sent a formal summary to the Centre requesting a ban on the party. This decision comes after violent protests in the province that resulted in numerous casualties and widespread destruction, particularly following clashes between TLP supporters and law enforcement in Muridke and surrounding areas.

The protests were sparked after the police dismantled a TLP protest camp in Muridke, which led to violent confrontations, the death of a police officer, and injuries to over 1,600 police personnel. The violence also resulted in significant property damage, with vehicles torched and businesses vandalized.

Fresh Protest Call Prompts Heightened Security

In light of the new protest call for today, Punjab has been placed on high alert, with Section 144 in effect, prohibiting public gatherings across the province. Authorities have taken stringent security measures, particularly in Lahore, where several key routes have been blocked, and metro bus services have been partially suspended to prevent the situation from escalating.

Punjab’s Inspector General of Police, Dr. Usman Anwar, assured the public that law enforcement agencies were committed to maintaining peace, warning that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt public order.

TLP’s Protest and Intelligence Warnings

The protest call, made by the president of TLP’s Balochistan chapter, urged supporters to gather at Lahore’s Data Darbar after Friday prayers. Intelligence reports warned that TLP activists might attempt to incite violence and escalate unrest, prompting a province-wide crackdown. Authorities are particularly concerned about potential violence in Lahore and other major cities.

While TLP has been at the forefront of the protests, another group, Tanzeemat-i-Ahle Sunnat, also called for a judicial inquiry into the recent Muridke operation. However, this group has distanced itself from any calls for violent protests, urging the government to resolve the issues through dialogue.

Security Forces Ramp Up Operations

In response to the protest threats, security operations have been intensified across Punjab. Police forces have arrested over 5,100 individuals linked to the violent TLP protests. In Lahore alone, 624 people have been detained, and several raids are ongoing to prevent the party’s mobilization.

The crackdown has been particularly focused on key locations like Data Darbar in Lahore, where roads were blocked off in anticipation of the protest. However, by early afternoon, the barriers were removed, and normal traffic resumed after Friday prayers. The authorities have made it clear that no one will be allowed to use the cover of protests to engage in unlawful activities.

Punjab Government’s Stance on TLP and Violent Protests

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari condemned the recent wave of violent protests, questioning their legitimacy, especially when framed under the pretext of solidarity with Gaza. She emphasized that Pakistan’s diplomatic role in supporting the Gaza ceasefire had been recognized, and expressed disbelief that violent protests were being used to further an already resolved issue.

Bukhari reiterated the provincial government’s stance on TLP, stating that the party’s actions had caused unnecessary harm to Pakistan’s public order. She confirmed that the provincial cabinet had approved a ban on TLP, which has now been forwarded to the federal government for further action. The government has also vowed to take legal action against individuals responsible for inciting violence and disrupting public life.

Crackdown on TLP’s Assets and Social Media Presence

In addition to seeking a ban, the Punjab government has announced plans to seize TLP’s assets, block its social media accounts, and remove any party-related propaganda from public spaces. Officials have also indicated that the party’s senior leaders and workers involved in spreading violence may be added to the Fourth Schedule under the Anti-Terrorism Act, restricting their movement and activities.

Meanwhile, authorities in Islamabad have taken additional steps by sealing TLP offices in Barakahu, Sowan, and other locations as part of the ongoing crackdown.

Conclusion: A Strong Response to Prevent Further Unrest

As Punjab braces for potential unrest, the government has made it clear that the use of violence in protests will not be tolerated. With security forces on high alert, the provincial administration is determined to protect public order and prevent further escalation. The ongoing crackdown and the potential ban on TLP signal the government’s firm stance against those who disrupt peace under the guise of protest.

The request for a TLP ban and the increased security measures highlight the Pakistani government’s commitment to curbing violent protests and maintaining public order in the face of rising political tensions. The situation remains under close watch as authorities continue to monitor developments across the province.
