The concept behind ‘Test Twenty’ is simple yet innovative: it condenses the traditional five-day Test match into a single day by introducing two 20-over innings per team. The entire fixture spans 80 overs, with both teams batting twice, ensuring a tactical depth reminiscent of traditional Test cricket while maintaining the exhilarating pace of a T20 match.
Each side’s first innings score carries over to the second innings, maintaining a balance between aggressive batting and consistent performance. The format allows for all possible outcomes: win, loss, tie, or draw. If the combined scores of both teams are level after the final innings, a Super Over will decide the winner. However, if a team finishes their second innings with five wickets still intact, they can opt to declare the match a draw.

The brainchild of Gaurav Bahirvani, Founder and CEO of Test Twenty, the new format was officially launched on Thursday. The concept has already received support from some of cricket’s biggest stars, including AB de Villiers, Matthew Hayden, Harbhajan Singh, and Sir Clive Lloyd. They hailed ‘Test Twenty’ as the “next chapter” in cricket, a fresh take that combines traditional tactics with modern-day thrills.
Junior Test Twenty Championship: A Platform for Young Talent
The format’s first major event, the Junior Test Twenty Championship, will take place in 2026, offering a platform for young cricketers aged 13 to 19. The tournament aims to test players not just for their hitting ability, but also for their decision-making, temperament, and cricketing intelligence.
The championship will feature six franchises, including three from India and three international franchises based in London, Dubai, and the United States. Each team will consist of 16 players, with an equal mix of Indian and international talent. Player selection will involve two routes:
- Direct Entry: Players recommended by certified cricketers, coaches, or administrators.
- Standard Entry: Open trials, utilizing AI and motion-sensor technology to ensure fairness.
To further elevate the competition, players will be assessed using the Test Twenty Intelligence Index (TTII), a data-driven system that evaluates decision-making, temperament, and overall cricketing IQ. Out of 1,000 shortlisted players, 300 will advance, and 96 will be drafted into the founding franchises.
Celebrity-Backed Franchises
Adding an extra layer of star appeal, the franchises are expected to be co-owned by celebrity and sporting families, many of whom “grew up with the game in their blood.” This involvement promises to attract new fans and increase visibility for the format, setting the stage for the next generation of cricket.
Key Innovations in ‘Test Twenty’ Rules
In addition to the basic format, several innovative rules have been designed to keep the game dynamic and exciting:
- Powerplay: One four-over powerplay per match, chosen by the captain. If unused, it’s automatically applied between overs 7 and 10 of the second innings.
- Follow-on: Can be enforced if the second-batting team trails by 75 or more runs after the first innings.
- Early Collapse Clause: If a team is bowled out in under 10 overs in its first innings, the opposition gets an additional three overs.
- Bowling Restrictions: Each team is limited to five bowlers, with a maximum of eight overs per bowler across both innings.
- Wides and No-Balls: Standard T20 rules apply, but if a bowler delivers three or more wides or no-balls in one over, the team incurs a three-run penalty.
- Over-Rate Penalty: Teams with slow over-rates lose five runs and face a timeout.
- Super Session: In case of a tie, a one-over eliminator will decide the result. If still tied, the team with the most boundaries wins.
