KP CM Afridi Vows Action Against Officials Who ‘Undermined People’s Mandate’ During 2024 Elections

KP CM Afridi Announces Accountability for Officials Over 2024 Election Controversies

PESHAWAR — Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has pledged to take strong action against government officials who, he claims, “undermined the people’s mandate” during the controversial 2024 general elections. The CM’s remarks come after his election to office on October 13, following the resignation of former CM Ali Amin Gandapur.

Afridi, chairing his first high-level meeting on law and order and governance, directed the KP chief secretary to identify officials who, according to him, failed to uphold the people’s vote during the elections.

Allegations of Electoral Misconduct

Referring to the February 8, 2024, elections, Afridi stated, “An attempt was made to rob people of their mandate. Unfortunately, some government officials did not protect the people’s mandate and gave in to external pressures.” His comments underscore the allegations of widespread rigging and manipulation that have plagued the aftermath of the elections.

In the 2024 polls, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidates contested as independents after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) stripped the party of its iconic ‘bat’ symbol, denying PTI the right to contest under its official banner. Despite these challenges, PTI managed to form a government in KP, with Gandapur as its chief minister. However, the party has continued to accuse both pre- and post-poll rigging, staging protests across the country.

Rewards for Integrity During Elections

In a rare gesture, Afridi also announced rewards for officials who stood firm against the pressure to manipulate the elections. “We will reward those who remained loyal to the people and their vote,” he said, emphasizing that integrity during the electoral process must be acknowledged.

Bulletproof Vehicles Controversy

In another development, Afridi ordered the return of bulletproof vehicles provided to the KP police by the interior ministry, citing their low quality. The vehicles were intended to enhance police security and operational capabilities but were deemed “insulting” by Afridi, who called them defective and old.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had presented the vehicles to the KP police on Sunday in a ceremony in Islamabad. However, Afridi’s harsh critique suggests a growing discontent with the government’s handling of security resources in the province. He argued that the substandard vehicles were not fit for the job and expressed frustration over their inadequate provision for the KP police force.

CM Afridi’s Governance Agenda

Sohail Afridi’s tenure as CM has started with a strong emphasis on accountability and governance reforms. His stance against election-related misconduct and the subpar security measures reflects his intent to restore public trust and improve the administration’s functioning in KP.

As Afridi presses forward with his political and security agenda, his leadership will be closely watched, especially regarding his promises of accountability and effective governance in one of Pakistan’s most volatile regions.

Afridi’s approach signals a tough stance on political integrity and security reform, two critical areas for the future of KP under his leadership.
