Ali Tareen opts not to renew Multan Sultans’ PSL contract

Owner cites financial losses, principled stance in emotional farewell

Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen has announced he will not renew the franchise’s Pakistan Super League (PSL) contract, citing persistent financial losses and his unwillingness to compromise on personal principles.

Tareen confirmed the decision in a detailed statement on X, saying he would “rather lose my team while standing on my feet than run it from my knees.” He added that being part of the 2021 PSL champions had been “one of the greatest honours” of his life.

Emotional farewell to fans and team

Tareen expressed deep affection for the Sultans’ fan base and the South Punjab region, which he said his late uncle, Alamgir Tareen, was immensely proud to represent.
He recalled telling the squad each season that while fans may forgive losses, “they will never forgive you if you stop fighting.”

Repeated financial losses key factor

The outgoing owner disclosed that the franchise incurred losses every year, but he never considered walking away—until now.
He emphasized that Multan Sultans had always meant “more than just numbers” to him, but renewing the contract would require compromising values he was not willing to abandon.

Tensions with PCB and PSL management

Tareen’s exit comes after months of public disputes with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and PSL management.
He had criticized decisions regarding:

  • Venue selection for the PSL 10 draft
  • The choice of anthem artist
  • Claims that the recent season was the “best ever”

This led to the PCB issuing a legal notice, accusing the franchise of violating multiple clauses. Tareen responded with a sarcastic “apology video,” ending it by dramatically tearing up the notice.

Future of Multan Sultans unclear

All five other PSL franchises have extended their contracts for another decade, while Multan Sultans will now head toward new ownership.
Tareen urged fans to continue supporting the team regardless of who takes over, promising to remain in the stands as a supporter.
