KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has recalled left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi from the ongoing Big Bash League 15 (BBL) after he suffered an “unexpected injury” during Brisbane Heat’s match against the Adelaide Strikers on Saturday.
Taking to X, the 25-year-old pacer thanked the Brisbane Heat management, teammates, and fans for their support during his BBL debut. “I’m massively thankful to the Brisbane Heat team and fans for showering me with immense love and support,” Shaheen said.
The Pakistan ODI captain confirmed that the PCB has summoned him for rehabilitation. “Due to an unexpected injury, I have been called back by the PCB and will have to take a rehab. Hopefully, I will be back on the field soon. Meanwhile, I will be cheering for the amazing team,” he added.
BBL Performance and International Implications
Shaheen appeared in four matches in this year’s BBL, taking only two wickets at an economy rate of 11.19. His early exit from the tournament coincides with his omission from Pakistan’s T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Both Afridi and former captain Babar Azam were left out of the refreshed squad due to their BBL commitments.
Pakistan is set to play three T20Is against Sri Lanka, followed by a home series against Australia in late January. These fixtures are part of preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka beginning February 7.
Shaheen’s knee injury also casts uncertainty over his participation in the T20 World Cup, raising questions about his availability for Pakistan’s marquee tournament early next year.
