Pakistan Test defeat became the defining story of the opening match of the three-Test series as England produced a commanding all-round performance to win by an innings and 103 runs at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday.

The result gives England a 1-0 advantage in the series and represents a comprehensive victory for Joe Root’s side. Pakistan were dismissed for 135 in their second innings after England had built a substantial first-innings advantage.

England Dominate at Headingley

Pakistan’s problems began in their first innings when they were bowled out for 171. England’s fast bowlers Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue shared all 10 wickets, taking five each and immediately putting the hosts in control.

England responded with a total of 409, establishing a 238-run first-innings lead. The hosts’ batting effort was built around several important contributions rather than one century.

Harry Brook narrowly missed three figures, scoring 91 from 93 deliveries. Jordan Cox made an impressive 73, while Root added 66 and Dan Lawrence scored 51.

Pakistan spinner Ali Usman was the standout bowler for the visitors, claiming five wickets for 92 runs.

Pakistan Batting Collapses Again

Needing a major response after conceding the sizeable deficit, Pakistan instead suffered another dramatic batting collapse.

The visitors were dismissed for only 135 in 37.3 overs, ending the contest before the scheduled close of play. Mohammad Rizwan was Pakistan’s highest scorer in the second innings with 41, while Shan Masood contributed 29.

Abdullah Shafique and Saud Shakeel made 15 and 14 respectively, but the remainder of the batting order failed to mount meaningful resistance.

The collapse highlighted the gulf between the two sides in conditions that continued to offer assistance to England’s seam attack.

England’s Pace Attack Seals Victory

Robinson and Tongue again proved decisive with the ball. Both bowlers finished the match with eight wickets, while Jofra Archer also made important contributions as England’s pace attack consistently troubled Pakistan’s batsmen.

England’s bowling unit combined movement, accuracy and sustained pressure, while their fielding further restricted Pakistan’s chances of rebuilding.

The victory also marked an impressive start to Root’s return to England’s Test captaincy. His leadership, alongside the effectiveness of England’s bowling attack, ensured that Pakistan were unable to recover after their poor first innings.

Pakistan Face Pressure Ahead of Second Test

For Pakistan, the scale of the defeat leaves significant questions ahead of the next match. The team will need substantial improvement with both bat and ball if it is to prevent England from extending their advantage.

The second Test will provide Pakistan with an opportunity to respond, but England now enter the remainder of the series with considerable momentum.

With the first Test completed inside three days, Pakistan’s immediate priority will be to address their batting vulnerability and find a way to counter England’s pace attack.

The Pakistan Test defeat at Headingley therefore gives England an early psychological advantage, while Pakistan must regroup quickly to keep the three-match series alive.See More on Pulse Pakistan
