Turkey Interpol Red Notice efforts have intensified after Ankara formally moved to seek an international alert against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in connection with a criminal case arising from the interception of a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza.
Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said on August 21 that authorities had initiated the process of seeking Interpol Red Notices for Netanyahu and Israeli official Afek Moskovitch. The move follows arrest warrants issued by Istanbul’s 11th High Criminal Court on July 14.
Turkey Seeks International Action Against Netanyahu

According to Turkish authorities, the proceedings concern an alleged Israeli armed intervention against civilians aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was attempting to transport humanitarian assistance to Gaza by sea.
Gürlek said the Istanbul court is conducting proceedings against 35 defendants, including Netanyahu and Moskovitch, over the incident in international waters.
Turkish authorities allege that activists involved in the mission were intercepted, subjected to force and detained during the operation.
The Turkish Justice Ministry has described the case as involving serious alleged violations and said the relevant documents were forwarded through government channels as part of the process for seeking international cooperation.
Arrest Warrants Issued in Istanbul
The legal action follows arrest warrants issued on July 14 against Netanyahu and Moskovitch. Turkish officials say the warrants relate to allegations including genocide.
The wider case reportedly includes allegations of crimes against humanity, aggravated deprivation of liberty, intentional injury, torture, property damage, aggravated robbery and hijacking of means of transportation.
These remain allegations under an ongoing judicial process and have not been established as convictions against the accused.
What the Interpol Request Could Mean
The Netanyahu Red Notice request does not automatically mean that Interpol has issued an arrest warrant.
Interpol states that a Red Notice is an international request to locate a wanted person and seek their provisional arrest pending extradition, surrender or another lawful process. However, it is not itself an international arrest warrant, and individual countries decide what legal action to take under their own laws.
The organization also reviews requests for compliance with its rules before publishing a notice.
As a result, Turkey’s request could increase the legal and diplomatic complications surrounding Netanyahu’s international travel if a notice is eventually approved and circulated.
Allegations Linked to the Gaza Flotilla
The case stems from the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, an international civilian initiative that sought to deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Reuters reported that the flotilla comprised 54 vessels and 426 participants from 39 countries. Israeli forces intercepted a number of the vessels while they were attempting to reach Gaza, while Israel said it was enforcing its naval blockade.
Turkey has strongly criticized the interception and has pursued legal action over the treatment of activists involved in the mission.
Israel’s Position and International Implications

The development adds another layer to already intense tensions between Turkey and Israel over the Gaza conflict.
Reuters reported that Netanyahu’s office rejected Turkey’s move, describing it as an attempt by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to intimidate Israeli leadership.
The dispute could also have broader diplomatic consequences as Ankara continues to push for international accountability over alleged violations in Gaza.
What Is an Interpol Red Notice?
An Interpol Red Notice alerts law-enforcement authorities in member countries that a person is internationally wanted and requests assistance in locating and provisionally arresting that individual.
Importantly, Interpol does not itself arrest people and cannot compel a member country to make an arrest. Any decision to detain a person remains the responsibility of national authorities operating under domestic law.
Global Sumud Flotilla Operation
The Global Sumud Flotilla has described its mission as a civilian humanitarian effort aimed at delivering aid and drawing international attention to Gaza’s humanitarian conditions.
Israel, meanwhile, has maintained that it will prevent attempts to breach its naval blockade.
Turkey’s latest legal move now places the flotilla incident at the centre of a potentially significant international law and diplomacy dispute, with the next major question being whether Interpol accepts and publishes the requested notices.see More on Pulse Pakistan
