Pakistan-Kyrgyzstan trade deal has opened a new chapter in economic relations between Islamabad and Bishkek, with both countries agreeing to work toward increasing bilateral trade to $200 million within the next two years. The agreement was signed in Bishkek during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s official visit, with the leaders also seeking stronger cooperation in investment, industry, connectivity and security.
Pakistan-Kyrgyzstan Trade Deal Targets $200 Million
The agreement represents a significant attempt to translate longstanding political ties between Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan into greater economic activity. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the existing trade volume, estimated at around $16 million, remains far below the potential of relations between the two countries.
Under the new framework, the two governments will work on practical measures to gradually expand trade, improve trading mechanisms, encourage joint investment projects, strengthen industrial cooperation and promote direct business-to-business contacts.
The formal agreement was signed by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Kyrgyzstan’s foreign minister. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Sadyr Japarov witnessed the signing in Bishkek.
Trade, Investment and Industrial Cooperation
The economic agenda extended beyond the trade target. Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan agreed to deepen cooperation across several sectors while creating greater opportunities for private businesses and investors.
The two sides have also highlighted the importance of transport and logistics links connecting Central and South Asia. Pakistan has expressed interest in strengthening transit corridors that could provide Kyrgyzstan with additional access toward regional markets.
Kyrgyz news agency Kabar reported that Pakistan has proposed further development of road and port connections, including routes through China and Uzbekistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz also said the first cargo shipment had already reached Pakistan, underscoring the importance of making regional connectivity more practical.
Transit Trade and Regional Connectivity
A separate Transit Trade Agreement was among the important documents signed during the visit. The broader package of agreements also covered areas including security, education, environmental protection, technology and humanitarian cooperation.
The joint statement issued by Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan emphasized the importance of improving transport and logistics cooperation as part of their long-term partnership. Both sides view stronger connectivity as an important foundation for expanding commercial links between Central and South Asia.
Security and Afghanistan
Security cooperation also featured prominently in discussions between the two countries. Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan agreed to strengthen cooperation against terrorism, extremism and drug trafficking.
The two sides also emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Afghanistan for developing connectivity between Central and South Asia. They stressed that Afghan territory should not be used for activities threatening the security of another country.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The latest agreements build on several previous rounds of high-level engagement. Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan have already identified $200 million in bilateral trade by 2027-28 as an economic objective, with both sides stressing the implementation of existing agreements.
The countries also signed a series of memoranda covering areas such as postal services, e-commerce, business cooperation and other sectors. Radio Pakistan reported that 16 memoranda of understanding were signed during the visit.
The developments indicate an effort by both governments to move beyond diplomatic goodwill toward concrete economic and institutional cooperation.
Japarov’s Warm Send-Off for Shehbaz Sharif
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit concluded with an unusual gesture of hospitality. Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov personally drove to the airport to see off the Pakistani prime minister.
Officials described the gesture as a reflection of the warmth and growing strength of relations between the two countries. The visit also included discussions on economic cooperation, connectivity and broader regional issues.
For Pakistan, the agreement provides an opportunity to expand access to Central Asian markets. For Kyrgyzstan, deeper engagement with Pakistan could strengthen access to South Asian trade routes.
