Lahore Traffic Warden Incident has triggered public concern after a 30-year-old motorcyclist, Muhammad Zain, died from injuries sustained during an incident involving a traffic official in the city’s Shadman area.
Zain was injured on August 26 near the Shadman Market U-turn and remained under treatment for around five days before succumbing to his injuries on September 1. Multiple reports have since highlighted conflicting accounts of how the crash occurred.
Family Alleges Traffic Warden Pushed Motorcycle
Zain’s family has alleged that a traffic official moved into the road while attempting to stop him and pushed or struck the moving motorcycle, causing the young man to lose control and hit the pavement.
The family says CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts should be examined to establish exactly how the accident occurred. They have also requested legal action against the traffic official.
According to the family’s account, Zain suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Services Hospital, where he underwent treatment but could not recover.
The family also alleged that authorities initially refused to release Zain’s body unless they accepted responsibility for the accident. However, later reports said the body was handed over to the family on September 2 following a court order. Police have denied allegations that the family was forced to accept responsibility for the incident.
Police Present Different Account
Police officials have presented a different version of events.
According to the police account, traffic assistant Sultanul Haq attempted to stop Zain, who was allegedly riding without a helmet. Police said Zain did not stop and instead collided with the traffic official.
The impact reportedly caused the motorcycle to go out of control and strike the pavement, resulting in severe injuries to Zain. The traffic official was also injured in the incident.
A case had already been registered against Zain on August 28 on the complaint of a senior traffic warden. Police alleged that he was riding without a helmet and had been driving negligently and at excessive speed.
Traffic Warden Suspended as Inquiry Ordered
Following Zain’s death and the family’s allegations, Chief Traffic Officer Lahore suspended traffic assistant Sultanul Haq over alleged negligence and dereliction of duty.
An inquiry has been assigned to the SSP Saddar Zone to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish responsibility on the basis of available evidence.
The emergence of CCTV footage has added further significance to the investigation. Reports indicate that the footage shows the traffic official moving toward the motorcycle as he attempted to stop Zain, although the precise sequence and legal responsibility remain matters for investigators to establish.
Family Demands Justice
Zain’s relatives have called for a transparent and impartial investigation, arguing that the available CCTV footage and eyewitness testimony should be carefully examined.
The family has also sought registration of a case against the traffic official and rejected what it describes as an attempt to place responsibility for the incident solely on the deceased motorcyclist.
For now, the competing accounts remain unresolved. The official inquiry is expected to determine whether the traffic official’s actions amounted to negligence or whether the collision occurred as described by police.
The case has renewed attention on how traffic enforcement personnel stop motorcyclists on busy roads and the need for procedures that protect both road users and enforcement officials.
