Aamir Khan is making waves in the film industry with his unconventional approach to movie distribution. The Bollywood superstar has chosen to release his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par, exclusively on YouTube Movies-on-Demand, bypassing traditional streaming platforms and revolutionizing how films reach audiences worldwide.
Aamir Khan is once again shaking up the entertainment industry with his bold move to release Sitaare Zameen Par on YouTube Movies-on-Demand, a decision that marks a departure from the traditional film release methods. In a move that could redefine distribution models, the film will be available for just $1.15 in 38 countries, including India, allowing audiences worldwide to access the film at an affordable price.
Khan shared his reasoning behind this groundbreaking decision, citing his long-standing realization that traditional theatrical releases only reach a small fraction of the global population. Reflecting on the success of films like 3 Idiots and Dangal, where only 2-3% of the population typically watches movies in theaters, Khan pondered how to reach the other 97-98%. His answer lies in digital accessibility, bypassing subscription-based streaming platforms, which he feels are not economically sustainable in the long run.
“YouTube’s massive reach, particularly in India, made it the perfect partner for this project,” said Khan. The film’s director also emphasized that this collaboration with YouTube aligns with the platform’s mission to democratize access to content. “Aamir’s vision and the way he drives democratization is at the heart of YouTube’s mission,” said Gunjan Soni, Managing Director of YouTube India.
This collaboration does not involve any advance payment to Aamir Khan Productions; instead, the revenue will be shared on a pay-per-view model. Khan sees this distribution model as not just a one-time experiment but a potential blueprint for his future films. “I believe this is the best way to reach my audience and offer quality content,” he said, signaling the possibility of similar releases for his future slate of films.
Sitaare Zameen Par will be available to stream from August 1, 2025, marking the beginning of a new era in digital film distribution.
