Field Marshal Asim Munir Appointed Pakistan’s First Chief of Defence Forces

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has appointed Field Marshal Asim Munir as the country’s first-ever Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), marking a historic shift in the nation’s military leadership structure. The appointment was approved by President Asif Ali Zardari following a summary submitted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Field Marshal Munir, who was promoted to the rank earlier this year—the first Field Marshal in over six decades—will continue to serve concurrently as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) for a five-year term. His elevation follows Pakistan’s decisive victory over India in the May conflict, which significantly enhanced the nation’s military profile.

Dual Role and Military Restructuring
Under recent legislative amendments passed by parliament, the role of CDF was created to oversee multi-domain integration, restructuring, and enhanced coordination among the army, navy, and air force. The post replaces the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), which has been abolished. The legislation also allows the government to delegate COAS powers to a Vice or Deputy Chief of Army Staff under written orders from the CDF.

Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu has also received a two-year extension to his tenure, set to begin after his current term concludes in March 2026, ensuring continuity in Pakistan Air Force leadership.

A Glimpse into Field Marshal Munir’s Career
Field Marshal Munir was commissioned in the 23rd Frontier Force Regiment in 1986 and has since held key operational and intelligence positions, including Director General of Military Intelligence, head of Inter-Services Intelligence, and Corps Commander Gujranwala. He has also commanded the 23rd Frontier Force Regiment, an infantry brigade, and served as Quartermaster General at GHQ.

Educated at prestigious institutions, Munir graduated from the Command and Staff College, Quetta, the Malaysian Armed Forces College, and the National Defence University, Islamabad. He also holds an MPhil in Public Policy and Strategic Security Management. Known as a sportsman, avid reader, traveller, and Hafiz-e-Quran, Munir has been praised for his strategic vision and leadership.

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also congratulated the field marshal, emphasizing the importance of his new role in ensuring national security and military coordination.

Field Marshal Munir expressed optimism about Pakistan’s future, stating that the country is on a path to progress and improvement under the restructured military leadership.
