Bangladesh Air Force Jet Crash Kills 19 at Dhaka School

Dhaka, July 21, 2025 – A tragic accident occurred today when a Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI training jet crashed into Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara neighborhood, killing at least 19 people, including the pilot, and injuring over 160 others. The crash, which happened shortly after takeoff during a routine training mission, has been described as the deadliest aviation disaster in the capital in recent memory.

The incident occurred around 1:06 p.m. local time when the Chinese-made F-7 BGI jet, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Md. Taukir Islam, experienced a mechanical failure shortly after departing from an air force base. Despite the pilot’s efforts to steer the aircraft toward a less populated area, it struck a two-story building on the school campus, triggering a massive explosion and fire. Videos from the scene showed thick black smoke and flames rising from the wreckage, with emergency crews working urgently to rescue survivors and extinguish the blaze.

Most of the victims were students, with the school catering to children aged 4 to 18. Over 50 people, including children and adults, were rushed to hospitals, many with severe burns, according to medical officials at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Rescue operations continued into the evening, with firefighters, military personnel, and volunteers searching through charred debris for survivors. A high-level investigation committee has been formed to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, expressed profound grief, calling the loss “irreparable” for the Air Force, students, parents, teachers, and staff. He pledged a thorough investigation and comprehensive support for the victims and their families. The government has declared a national day of mourning on Tuesday, with flags to be flown at half-mast across the country and special prayers held at places of worship.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended condolences, stating, “India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance.” The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the densely populated Uttara area, with eyewitnesses describing chaotic scenes as parents and students scrambled amidst the devastation.
