Bhakkar Suicide Attack Kills Policemen, Sparks Strong Condemnation

Bhakkar suicide attack has once again underscored the persistent security challenges facing Pakistan after a suicide bomber targeted a police checkpost in Punjab’s Bhakkar district, killing two police personnel and injuring another, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The attack took place at the Dajal checkpost near a bridge linking Punjab with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during Iftar time, a period when security personnel were maintaining routine vigilance despite reduced civilian movement. According to police, the attacker detonated explosives at close range, causing a powerful blast that damaged the checkpost and surrounding infrastructure.

Suicide Blast at Strategic Checkpost

District Police Officer Shehzad Rafiq Awan said the location was strategically significant due to its proximity to an inter-provincial route frequently monitored to prevent militant movement. The timing and placement of the attack indicate a deliberate attempt to target law enforcement personnel during a vulnerable moment.

Security forces quickly cordoned off the area following the explosion, while bomb disposal and forensic teams were dispatched to collect evidence. Initial assessments suggest the use of a body-borne improvised explosive device.

Police Casualties and Emergency Response

Police identified the martyred officers as Constable Faheem Abbas and Constable Shehbaz Madani, both of whom were on duty at the checkpost. Another officer, Constable Arshad, sustained injuries and was immediately shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Bhakkar.

Hospital officials said the injured officer’s condition remains stable but under close medical observation. Emergency protocols were activated across the district, and additional security personnel were deployed to sensitive installations following the Bhakkar suicide attack.

Condemnation from National and Provincial Leaders

Inspector General of Punjab Police Abdul Kareem paid tribute to the fallen officers, calling their sacrifice “immortal” and a testament to the police force’s commitment to protecting the country.

“The Punjab Police stands like a wall of steel against terrorism and hostile threats,” the IG said, while directing authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured constable and full support for the families of the martyrs.

President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the attack, expressing profound grief over the loss of lives and extending condolences to the bereaved families. He reiterated that such acts of terror would not shake the nation’s resolve.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also denounced the assault, praising the courage of the martyred policemen and praying for the swift recovery of the injured officer. She assured that the provincial government would stand by the families of the victims.

Rising Security Concerns Amid Back-to-Back Attacks

The Bhakkar suicide attack occurred on the same day as another deadly incident in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohat district, where militants opened fire on a police mobile van in a remote area, killing at least six policemen, including a deputy superintendent.

Security analysts note that the near-simultaneous attacks point to a worrying pattern of renewed militant activity targeting police forces across provinces. Authorities say intelligence-based operations are being intensified to dismantle terrorist networks and prevent further violence.

Despite these challenges, officials insist that the morale of law enforcement remains high and that decisive action will continue against all elements threatening public safety.
