Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) organized nationwide protests on August 5, marking the second anniversary of Imran Khan’s imprisonment. The demonstrations, which aimed to demand the former Prime Minister’s release, saw at least 300 party activists detained by the police in Lahore alone. Despite security restrictions and a ban on public gatherings, PTI vowed to continue its peaceful protests across the country.
On the second anniversary of Imran Khan’s imprisonment, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) intensified its nationwide protests, calling for the release of the party’s founder. The protests unfolded amid stringent security measures, with the government imposing Section 144 in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, barring large gatherings. PTI sources reported that up to 300 activists were arrested by police in Lahore following overnight raids.
In a statement shared by PTI, the party confirmed that several high-profile members, including seven members of the Punjab Assembly, were detained during the raids. These included Moeen Riaz Qureshi, Farrukh Javed Moon, Khawaja Salahuddin, and others. However, the police later released the lawmakers by the evening. Rehana Dar, detained earlier near Aiwan-e-Adal, was also freed.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s supporters across the country rallied under the banner of the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP). PTI leaders, including Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, organized rallies in different provinces. Gohar, addressing the situation, stated that the protests would continue until Khan’s release. Provincial leaders have been instructed to lead demonstrations in their respective constituencies.
Imran Khan, who was ousted from power in April 2022, was arrested in May 2023, sparking nationwide protests. His arrest led to clashes with the military and a widespread crackdown on PTI members. Despite facing multiple legal challenges and convictions, Khan maintains that the charges against him are politically motivated.
The government’s security measures were escalated, particularly around Adiala Jail, where Khan is incarcerated. Authorities deployed additional police forces following intelligence reports indicating potential threats to public safety. Despite this, PTI leaders, including Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, are scheduled to lead a protest outside Adiala Jail.
PTI has also voiced concerns over the lack of coordination and imposed restrictions limiting their ability to meet and organize protests. Despite these challenges, the party remains resolute in its demands for a fair judicial process and the restoration of democracy.
