ICC Names Elite Match Officials for T20 World Cup 2026 Group Stage

T20 World Cup 2026 preparations gained momentum as the International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled the panel of match officials for the group-stage fixtures of the prestigious tournament.

The ICC confirmed the appointments on Friday, naming a total of 24 on-field umpires and six match referees to oversee the initial phase of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The event is set to kick off on February 7, with matches spread across venues in India and Sri Lanka. Officials for the Super Eight, semi-finals, and final will be announced separately at a later stage.

    Tournament Overview and Announcement

The group stage will feature intense competition among 20 teams divided into four groups. High-profile clashes, including the India-Pakistan encounter, have already drawn significant attention, and the ICC has entrusted experienced and emerging officials to maintain the highest standards of umpiring and refereeing.

Key Appointments for Opening Matches T20 World Cup 2026

The tournament opener on February 7 will see Pakistan take on the Netherlands at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground in Colombo, setting the stage for an exciting start to the competition. On-field officiating duties for the high-profile encounter will be handled by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Dharmasena alongside New Zealand’s Wayne Knights. The match will be a significant milestone for Knights, who is set to make his debut as an on-field umpire at a Men’s T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, Dharmasena brings a wealth of experience to the fixture, having officiated in 37 matches in the format, including the finals of the 2016 and 2022 editions, a record that places him fourth on the all-time list of T20 World Cup umpires.

Later that day in Kolkata, Scotland face the West Indies in a Group C fixture, officiated by India’s Nitin Menon and Australia’s Sam Nogajski. Menon was part of the on-field team for the 2024 semi-final between Afghanistan and South Africa, while Nogajski stood in four group games at the previous edition, including India vs USA.

India’s campaign begins against the USA in Kolkata, with Australians Paul Reiffel and Rod Tucker appointed. Tucker, the most experienced official in T20 World Cup history with 46 matches, is poised to reach his 50th appearance during this tournament. He is also scheduled for key games involving England vs Nepal, India vs Namibia, and South Africa vs UAE.

    Standout Umpires and Milestones

Several officials are set for notable reunions and milestones. Chris Gaffaney and Richard Illingworth, who together officiated the 2024 final, will reunite for Australia vs Ireland on February 11. Illingworth will also pair with Dharmasena for the marquee India vs Pakistan clash in Colombo on February 15.
