Internet Services Suspended in Twin Cities as TLP Proceeds with March Towards Islamabad

Efforts to Prevent March Intensify

ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi took decisive action on Friday, suspending cellular internet services across both cities as Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) continued its march towards the federal capital. The Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control issued a notification announcing the suspension of 3G and 4G services, effective from midnight, citing security concerns and the ongoing protest.

The ministry’s decision was backed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), with coordination from the Islamabad commissioner, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) office, and Rawalpindi’s local authorities to ensure the suspension was enforced.

Government’s Firm Stance Against TLP’s Protest

The suspension of internet services comes as the federal government intensifies its efforts to stop TLP from advancing toward Islamabad. Talal Chaudhry, the Minister of State for Interior, addressed the media, reaffirming that the government was employing peaceful measures to thwart the planned march. However, Chaudhry made it clear that the state would not be “blackmailed by mobs” and that law and order would be strictly maintained.

Chaudhry questioned the motive behind TLP’s march, pointing out that Palestinians had recently celebrated a peace deal concerning Gaza, making the timing of the protest seemingly irrelevant. “What is the purpose of this protest despite a resolution to the issue of Palestine and Gaza?” he asked, suggesting that the protest might be politically motivated.

Preventive Measures and Legal Restrictions

In response to the growing tensions, the government has implemented various security measures, including the placement of containers on major roads in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to prevent the marchers from reaching the capital. The authorities have also imposed Section 144 of the CrPC across Punjab, prohibiting public gatherings, rallies, and the display of weapons. This legal measure aims to prevent any disruptions to public order and ensure that no large crowds gather in the streets.

Minister Accuses TLP of Exploiting Sensitive Issues

During his press conference, Minister Chaudhry accused TLP of exploiting sensitive national and international issues for political gain. He pointed out that the party had previously been involved in violent protests and attacks on public property. The government’s priority, he asserted, was to protect citizens and maintain peace. “We will not let these mobs and protests move forward,” he added, emphasizing the government’s resolve to prevent further escalation.

The ongoing protest by TLP, a hardline religious political party, has raised serious concerns about security and stability in the region. With the internet suspension and other preventive measures in place, the government aims to curb the potential for unrest and ensure that the situation remains under control.
