Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iranian president’s political adviser, is set to visit Pakistan on August 2 for a two-day official trip, according to an announcement from Iran’s IRNA news agency. This visit marks the second official trip by an Iranian president to Pakistan in consecutive years, further strengthening bilateral ties between the two neighboring nations.
The visit of Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, a key Iranian official, is scheduled to take place at the invitation of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to Iranian political adviser Mehdi Sanai, Dr. Pezeshkian’s visit will focus on discussions surrounding cultural, commercial, and political cooperation between Iran and Pakistan. The two-day trip will also involve meetings with “cultural and commercial elites” of Pakistan to explore ways to enhance bilateral ties.

This diplomatic engagement comes after a similar visit by Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi in April 2024. During his visit, Raisi spent time in Lahore and Karachi, marking an important milestone in Pakistan-Iran relations. However, the visit also coincided with the tragic helicopter crash that led to Raisi’s death shortly afterward.

Dr. Pezeshkian’s visit is part of a broader effort to increase cooperation between the two nations in various sectors, including trade, which currently stands at $3 billion. Both governments are eager to further strengthen ties in political, economic, religious, and cultural realms, with a special emphasis on enhancing provincial and border cooperation.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has expressed strong support for the upcoming visit and noted that the Pakistani government values diplomacy and a constructive approach to regional relations. Dar also underscored Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to support de-escalation and dialogue in the region, particularly in light of tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear facilities and regional security dynamics.

Dr. Pezeshkian’s visit will also come after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Iran in May 2024, where he expressed gratitude for Iran’s support during the India-Pakistan conflict. Sharif met with Iran’s leadership to further deepen regional cooperation and strengthen diplomatic relations.

The visit is seen as a critical step in fostering deeper bilateral ties between Pakistan and Iran, two countries with shared cultural and historical ties. Both nations are looking to expand their collaboration in key areas such as trade, security, and regional stability.
