Pakistan to Welcome SCO Leaders in 2027

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that Pakistan will host the next Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in 2027. He directed authorities to immediately begin preparations, including new accommodations, city beautification, and plantation drives to welcome international delegates.

Groundbreaking of T-Chowk Flyover

The announcement came during the groundbreaking of the T-Chowk Flyover Project on Islamabad Expressway — a long-awaited development to ease heavy congestion at one of the capital’s busiest entry points.

The project, worth Rs 1.495 billion, will be completed within 150 days and is expected to open by February 9, 2026. The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is funding the construction through its own resources, requiring no additional land acquisition.

Major Relief for Commuters

Once completed, the 1.034 km long and 11.3 m wide flyover will facilitate around 41,500 vehicles daily, significantly improving traffic flow between Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Modern street lighting and landscaping are also planned to enhance the structure’s functionality and appearance.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi highlighted that the project design saved Rs 7 billion by avoiding land purchases. He assured citizens that quality standards would not be compromised.

PM Emphasizes Quality and Urban Growth

Addressing the ceremony, PM Shehbaz urged officials to prioritize speed without sacrificing construction quality. He praised CDA, Nespak, and the Interior Ministry for their efforts in planning the project.

The premier also outlined broader development goals linked to the upcoming SCO Summit. These include large-scale plantation efforts, supported by saplings gifted from Tajikistan, and additional urban upgrades across the capital.

Future Rail Car Project for Twin Cities

PM Shehbaz further revealed plans for a rail car service to connect Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Calling it a potential “great gift” for residents, he instructed relevant authorities to begin working on the project without delay.

With Pakistan set to host the 2027 SCO Summit, the T-Chowk flyover stands as both a critical infrastructure milestone and a symbol of Islamabad’s readiness to welcome the world.
