TLP Offices Sealed in Islamabad After Violent Protests, Punjab Calls for Ban on Extremist Group

Islamabad Seals TLP Offices After Violent Protests, Punjab Pushes for Ban

Islamabad — The Islamabad district administration has sealed the offices of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) following a series of violent protests orchestrated by the politico-religious party. Sources confirmed to Geo News on Thursday that the TLP offices in areas such as Barakahu and Sowan, among others in the federal capital, were sealed by the district authorities in response to the escalating unrest.

This move came just hours after the Punjab provincial government decided to approach the federal government with a request to impose a nationwide ban on TLP, which they have branded an “extremist party.” This decision was made in light of recent protests that spiraled into violence.

Government Crackdown and Punjab’s Response

The decision to close the TLP offices followed a high-level law and order meeting in Lahore chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The provincial leadership approved “extraordinary measures” aimed at reasserting the state’s authority and curbing the growing unrest. These measures were seen as an attempt to bring the violent protests under control and ensure the enforcement of the law.

Earlier in the week, law enforcement agencies launched a crackdown on TLP protesters in Muridke, dismantling their protest camp and resulting in violent clashes. The situation escalated as TLP protesters tried to march towards Islamabad to express solidarity with Gaza and Palestine, despite a government ban on public gatherings under Section 144.

Violent Clashes and Casualties

The protests quickly turned violent, with clashes erupting between TLP supporters and law enforcement. The violence claimed the life of one station house officer (SHO), and 48 police personnel were injured, 17 of whom sustained gunshot wounds. In addition, at least three TLP workers and a passerby died, while over 30 civilians were injured during the unrest.

The protest, which aimed to reach the capital, resulted in widespread destruction. Reports indicated that at least 40 government and private vehicles were burned, and several shops were set on fire. The protests caused major disruption in the capital and surrounding areas.

Ongoing Unrest and Government Response

The Pakistani government has repeatedly condemned the TLP’s actions, with officials highlighting the destruction caused by the group’s attempts to defy legal restrictions on public gatherings. With TLP’s continuous efforts to stage such protests, the government is under increasing pressure to take stronger measures to prevent further violence.

The sealing of TLP offices in Islamabad marks a significant step in the government’s crackdown on the group, which has been accused of fueling extremist ideologies and engaging in violent protests.

As tensions continue to rise, the government’s strategy for handling TLP’s actions will be crucial in determining the future course of the group’s operations in Pakistan. The call for a national ban reflects the growing concerns over the group’s impact on national security and public order.
