UK Lifts Ban on Pakistani Airlines, Boosting PIA Operations

The United Kingdom has lifted its long-standing ban on Pakistani airlines, a landmark decision announced on July 16, 2025, by British High Commissioner Jane Marriott. This move paves the way for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to resume flights to the UK, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s aviation sector and bilateral ties.

The British High Commission confirmed that Pakistan has been removed from the UK’s Air Safety List, recognizing improvements in the country’s aviation safety systems. While Pakistani airlines must still secure operational approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority, the decision, based on impartial technical assessments by the UK’s Air Safety Committee, is a major step forward. The development is expected to enhance PIA’s privatization prospects and restore its international routes, benefiting nearly 10 million overseas Pakistanis.

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott praised the collaboration between Pakistani and UK aviation experts, expressing enthusiasm for future flights. She highlighted that improved air connectivity will strengthen UK-Pakistan relations, with bilateral trade already exceeding £4.7 billion. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif celebrated the decision on X, stating, “Alhamdulillah! PIA returns to UK skies,” while criticizing past PTI leadership for causing reputational damage that led to the ban. He credited the government’s efforts for this achievement, emphasizing its role in restoring Pakistan’s global aviation standing.

The lifting of the ban is expected to reunite families, boost tourism, and deepen economic ties. As PIA prepares to apply for operational licenses, the government is also eyeing the resumption of flights to other destinations, including New York, signaling a broader revival of Pakistan’s aviation sector.
