Government Ends Ban on New Gas Connections, Consumers to Receive RLNG

Ban on Domestic Connections Lifted
The federal government has ended a four-year ban on new domestic gas connections, announcing that households will now be provided re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) instead of local gas. The move, approved by the federal cabinet on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives, aims to ease the difficulties faced by citizens since the restrictions were imposed in 2021.

Relief for Residents of New Housing Schemes
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik explained that the ban had forced residents of new housing societies and apartments to rely on LPG cylinders and alternative fuels. He noted that RLNG, while costlier than local natural gas, remains 30–35% cheaper than LPG.

“The pain of refilling cylinders, the risks of substandard equipment, and frequent leakages created constant challenges for families. This decision provides a safer and more consistent supply option,” Malik said.

Pending applications will soon be processed, with applicants required to pay the RLNG connection fee and install the new system. The minister confirmed that billing cycles would follow the existing monthly pattern.

Future Energy Plans
Malik acknowledged that RLNG is not inexpensive but assured that the government is working to boost local gas exploration to bring down costs in the long term.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry added that the decision resolves longstanding issues faced by citizens without gas access. He also briefed on other cabinet discussions, including flood challenges in Punjab, an agricultural emergency plan, counterterrorism efforts, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s strategic ties with China.
