Karachi Reels from Third Day of Torrential Rains as Rivers Overflow, Four Drown in Gadap

Widespread Urban Flooding
Karachi remained under water for a third consecutive day on Wednesday as relentless monsoon rains inundated streets, homes, and major roads. While drainage cleared Shahrah-e-Faisal, the M-9 Motorway, and Lyari Expressway — now reopened to traffic — several low-lying neighbourhoods were still submerged.

Rivers Swell, Tragedy in Gadap
The downpour caused Lyari and Malir rivers to swell dangerously, flooding Saadi Garden and Saadi Town where entire lanes and vehicles disappeared under water. In Gadap, four people drowned in the raging river. Rescue teams have so far recovered two bodies, including that of a woman.

Rescue and Relief Efforts
Teams from Rescue 1122, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), and the Pakistan Army evacuated more than 350 residents overnight. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah inspected affected sites including Korangi Causeway and Saadi Town, directing institutions to speed up pumping operations after water from Lath and Thado dams entered via the motorway.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to coordinate with provincial agencies, prioritizing rehabilitation of affected families.

Power Supply Amid Deluge
Despite widespread flooding, K-Electric reported that most of its 2,100 feeders remained operational. At the height of the downpour, around 200 feeders were briefly shut down as a precaution, with swift restoration once conditions allowed. CEO Moonis Alvi praised teams for maintaining stability in the power network despite the crisis.

Weather Outlook
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the weather system over Sindh has now weakened into a low-pressure area west of Karachi, though light to moderate rains may persist in Karachi Division, Jamshoro, Thatta, and Sujawal. Authorities also warned that the Indus River at Guddu could reach very high flood levels within 24 hours, with Sukkur expected to hit a high flood stage within 48 hours.

Recent rainfall data shows Surjani Town topping the charts with 143.8mm from September 8 to 10, followed by Gulshan-e-Maymar at 109.8mm and Gulshan-e-Hadeed at 92mm.
