Batter is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well, says BCCI
Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a Sydney hospital after sustaining a severe laceration injury to his spleen during the third One Day International (ODI) against Australia, Indian media reported on Saturday.
Injury details and medical update
In a statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Iyer suffered an impact injury to his left lower rib cage while fielding on October 25. “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well,” the statement read.
The BCCI added that its medical team is working in coordination with specialists in both Sydney and India, and that the Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to monitor Iyer’s recovery and assess his progress daily.

How the injury happened
The incident occurred when Iyer sprinted back from backward point to take a running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. Though the catch was successful, he landed awkwardly and was seen clutching his side in pain before being escorted off the field by medical staff.
Recent form and absence from upcoming series
Iyer had scored 11 and 61 in the first two matches of the series, both of which India lost. The team bounced back in the final ODI, registering a nine-wicket win led by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, though Australia sealed the series 2–1.
Due to his injury, Iyer has been left out of India’s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against Australia starting October 29. His participation in the ODI series against South Africa, beginning November 30, remains uncertain and will depend on his recovery timeline.
