Islamabad airport initiative marks a milestone in Pakistan’s aviation sector as Islamabad International Airport has become the country’s first fully cashless airport, officials confirmed on Monday.
The move allows passengers to complete payments across the airport digitally, including airline ticketing, parking, food and beverage outlets, retail shops, and duty-free stores. Travelers can now use digital wallets, QR codes, mobile banking, and debit or credit cards for all transactions.
Scope of Cashless System Across Airport Services
Airport authorities say the initiative is designed to increase transparency, streamline payment processes, and provide a seamless travel experience. The cashless system covers all passenger touchpoints, ensuring no physical money is exchanged anywhere within airport premises.
Mobile App and Baggage Tracking Facilities
In addition to digital payments, Islamabad International Airport has launched a modern mobile application enabling passengers to track lost luggage from anywhere in the world. Chief Operating Officer Aftab Gilani highlighted that both the cashless system and baggage tracking technology aim to improve passenger convenience while enhancing the airport’s global standing.
Senior Joint Director Commercial Malik Amjad described the initiative as a major step toward modernizing airport services and aligning with international best practices.

Government Privatisation Plans and Future Outlook
The development follows the federal government’s decision to include Islamabad International Airport in its active privatisation programme, announced last month. According to the Ministry of Privatisation, this move is part of a broader plan, similar to ongoing privatisation efforts at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport and Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
Officials believe the transition to a cashless system will make the airport more attractive to investors and enhance overall operational efficiency as it moves toward private management.
Significance for Passenger Convenience and International Standing
The adoption of digital payments is expected to provide travelers with a faster, more convenient experience while reducing risks associated with cash handling. Airport authorities assert that this step places Islamabad International Airport among leading modern airports globally, reflecting Pakistan’s commitment to digital transformation in transport infrastructure.
