China Reaffirms Economic and Security Support to Pakistan at SCO Summit

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese President Xi Jinping have pledged to further strengthen Pakistan-China strategic ties, with Beijing assuring continued support for Islamabad’s economic growth and counter-terrorism efforts.

The two leaders held a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, where they reviewed bilateral relations and reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Strengthening the Strategic Partnership

Congratulating Xi on hosting the SCO Heads of State Summit, Prime Minister Shehbaz praised China’s development achievements and leadership role in global affairs. He expressed Pakistan’s readiness to actively participate in the next phase of CPEC, which has now entered its second stage of development.

“Pakistan fully supports President Xi’s historic initiatives on global governance, development, security, and solarisation. These efforts will contribute to regional and global peace, stability, and prosperity,” the premier said.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and senior ministers, underscoring the importance Islamabad attaches to its ties with Beijing.

China’s Commitment

President Xi reassured Pakistan of Beijing’s steadfast support, noting that China is focusing on Pakistan’s most crucial economic sectors. He emphasized the need to ensure the security of Chinese personnel and projects in Pakistan, expressing confidence that Islamabad would continue taking effective measures on that front.

“CPEC has entered its second phase, and we are committed to supporting Pakistan’s economic growth while ensuring shared development,” Xi said.

Looking Ahead

The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues, agreeing to maintain close coordination in pursuit of shared goals. Prime Minister Shehbaz reiterated his invitation for President Xi to visit Pakistan next year, saying such a visit would further solidify bilateral ties.
