Sept. 17, 2025 — Pakistan security forces killed five militants during an intelligence-led operation in Khuzdar district, Balochistan, the military’s media wing said on Wednesday. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the operation, carried out on the night of Sept. 14–15, targeted members of a group it described as an India-linked proxy.
Operation and outcome
According to the ISPR, troops engaged the suspected militants after intelligence pinpointed their location. Following an exchange of fire, five insurgents were neutralised. The military reported that weapons, ammunition and explosive material were recovered at the site, and that clearance and sanitisation efforts were under way to ensure no other fighters remained in the area.
Linked engagements across the northwest
The Khuzdar action came days after separate operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sept. 13 and 14, where security forces said they eliminated 31 militants from a different group. The ISPR framed these operations as part of a sustained push to dismantle networks it alleges are backed from across the border.
Regional and security context
Military statements tied the recent spike in cross-border incidents to instability in neighbouring Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover in 2021. Pakistan shares a roughly 2,500-kilometre frontier with Afghanistan that officials characterise as porous, and Islamabad has repeatedly urged Kabul to prevent militant groups from using Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan.
A local think tank’s report, cited by authorities, recorded a sharp rise in militant incidents in August, with a month-on-month increase of about 74 percent and a total of 194 fatalities attributed to such attacks during that month.
Official language and next steps
The ISPR described the targeted groups using the military’s terminology and linked them to Indian sponsorship, an allegation often raised in official statements. Security forces said follow-up clearance operations would continue in the Khuzdar area to remove any remaining threats and secure local communities.
What this means
The operation underscores continuing counterterrorism activity in Pakistan’s border provinces and the army’s emphasis on intelligence-driven raids to disrupt militant networks. Observers will watch whether such operations are followed by arrests, further recoveries, or coordinated action along border areas to reduce the risk of cross-border infiltration.
