Karachi has been hit with heavy rainfall since Tuesday morning, resulting in widespread urban flooding, traffic disruptions, and power outages across various city areas. As the monsoon season progresses, citizens are urged to take precautionary measures while authorities work to manage the situation.
The city of Karachi is currently grappling with intense rainfall that began on Tuesday morning, bringing both relief from the summer heat and severe challenges in its wake. Areas like Gulshan-i-Hadeed, Airport Old Area, and Keamari recorded significant rainfall, with up to 145mm in some regions. These downpours have caused major urban flooding, submerging roads and stranding traffic. Power outages have further complicated the situation, with multiple districts facing disruptions to their electricity supply.

The Meteorological Department had earlier predicted rainfall for the city this week, and conditions are expected to worsen in the coming days. The Met Office forecasted intermittent heavy rains until August 22, with possible flash floods and strong winds expected in several regions of Sindh and parts of Balochistan.
As the rainwater accumulates in various low-lying areas, efforts to restore power have been delayed. K-Electric confirmed that over 1,340 feeders were supplying power as of 4:15 PM, but rainwater in flood-prone areas is hindering restoration work. The company has temporarily suspended power supply in vulnerable zones to avoid accidents related to encroachments and electricity theft.
Authorities, including the Sindh Chief Secretary and local governments, have been actively coordinating with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) to manage the situation. A rain emergency has been declared in Karachi, and services such as municipal, fire brigade, and rescue teams are on high alert to address emergencies caused by the rains. Citizens have been urged to limit movement, avoid electrical installations, and take extra caution on flooded roads.
In response to the worsening conditions, the Sindh government has mobilized rescue teams and set up a 24/7 Rain Emergency Cell at the Governor’s House to provide assistance. Police forces are also in place, ensuring public safety by managing traffic and providing quick response services in affected areas.
Local authorities are focusing on clearing major highways first, followed by smaller roads, to facilitate access for emergency vehicles and essential services. In light of the situation, citizens have been advised to remain vigilant, contact local authorities for help, and avoid unnecessary travel during the ongoing rainstorms.
