The Cambridge Dictionary has welcomed 6,000 new terms, with popular Gen Z and Gen Alpha words like “delulu,” “skibidi,” and “tradwife” making their way into the official lexicon. These additions reflect the growing influence of internet culture and social media trends on the English language.
In a move that highlights the evolving nature of language, the Cambridge Dictionary has added 6,000 new words, including several terms widely used by Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Among the most notable inclusions are “skibidi,” “delulu,” and “tradwife,” words that have gained traction through social media platforms and online memes.
“Tradwife,” a blend of “traditional wife,” has emerged from a controversial trend on Instagram and TikTok that advocates for traditional gender roles. The dictionary describes it as reflecting a growing online movement, often debated in digital spaces.
“Skibidi,” a term popularized by the “Skibidi Toilet” YouTube channel, is defined as a slang word with various meanings, ranging from “cool” or “bad” to something that has no specific meaning at all. The term is associated with the playful, often nonsensical content that floods the internet, especially among younger audiences.
Another notable addition is “delulu,” a term derived from “delusional,” describing someone who believes things that are not real or true, often as a result of choosing to do so. The dictionary example even cites an instance where Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used the phrase “delulu with no solulu” in a 2025 speech, showcasing its growing relevance.
Colin McIntosh, Lexical Programme Manager at Cambridge Dictionary, remarked, “It’s not every day you get to see words like skibidi and delulu make their way into the Cambridge Dictionary. We only add words where we think they’ll have staying power, and internet culture is undoubtedly leaving its mark on the English language.”
Other interesting additions include “lewk,” used to describe a distinct fashion look, popularized by the TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race, and “inspo,” shorthand for inspiration. The rise of remote work has also introduced “mouse jiggler,” a tool used to simulate activity while away from the computer.
Additionally, the term “forever chemical” has been added to reflect concerns over man-made chemicals that persist in the environment, a growing issue amid global environmental challenges.
The continued inclusion of Gen Z and internet-driven terms in the dictionary underscores how digital culture is shaping the way we communicate and how quickly language evolves in response to societal shifts.
