Judge Frank Caprio, Star of Caught in Providence, Dies Aged 88

Frank Caprio, beloved Chief Judge of Providence Municipal Court and star of the reality show Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. His family confirmed the news, stating that he passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and justice.

Frank Caprio, known for his warmth, humor, and compassionate approach to the law, died on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88. The longtime Chief Judge of Providence Municipal Court had gained international fame as the star of Caught in Providence, a reality television show that aired for over two decades. The program, which featured Caprio’s empathetic rulings on minor traffic offenses, resonated deeply with viewers, many of whom were touched by his unique combination of justice and humanity.

Caprio’s family shared the news of his passing in a heartfelt statement on Facebook, noting that he had fought a long and brave battle with pancreatic cancer. “In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world – just as he did every day,” they wrote.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee paid tribute to the late judge, declaring that flags at state buildings would fly at half-mast until Caprio’s burial. “Judge Caprio was a Rhode Island treasure,” McKee said. “He not only served the public well, but he connected with people in a meaningful way. He showed us all what justice with humanity can look like.”

Caprio’s impact extended far beyond his courtroom. His reality show, Caught in Providence, became a hit locally before gaining national attention. His ability to bring humor and comfort to those in his courtroom made him a widely respected figure. Caprio’s ruling style, which he often described by saying, “I don’t wear a badge under my robe, I wear a heart,” resonated with viewers, offering a refreshing take on justice.

In addition to his television fame, Caprio published a memoir earlier this year titled Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America’s Nicest Judge. The book reflected on his career and the personal stories of those he had encountered in his courtroom.

Despite his illness, Caprio remained open about his struggle with pancreatic cancer, sharing updates with his 1.7 million Instagram followers, often during his chemotherapy sessions. His posts showcased his resilient spirit, and in one video, he was seen listening to music by singer-songwriter Jewel, who later expressed her honor in providing him comfort during his difficult time.

Judge Caprio’s passing marks the end of an era for Rhode Island, where he is remembered not only as a respected judge but as a man whose kindness and compassion extended far beyond the courtroom.
